2024 State Championships: Area Wrestlers and Swimmers Still in the Hunt After Day 1

After a grueling day on the mats and in the pool, our broader community remains well represented in this year’s NMAA State Championships. Tomorrow, February 24, will prove to be a trying day as our local competitors take their shot at a State Championship.

Wrestling

Eight local wrestlers remain in the hunt for the title–4 boys and 4 girls.

Boys
Gadsden High School: Mathius Soto (133 pounds)--pinned Harkness (Carlsbad), 1:48; dec. 6-1 Lujan (Roswell); will face Madrid (Capital) in the semi-finals.

Gadsden High School: Alius Soto (172 pounds)--pinned Caraveo (West Mesa), 4:39; dec. 11-7 Siska (Volcano Vista); will face Valencia (Cleveland) in the semi-finals.

Las Cruces High School: Kash Alley (215 pounds)--pinned Rios (Rio Rancho), 2:34; dec. 18-14 Molina (Albuquerque); will face undefeated Posa (La Cueva) in the semi-finals.

Santa Teresa High School: Tristan Crosby (215 pounds)--pinned Alvarez (Los Alamos), 0:26; pinned Bunny (Shiprock), 0:33; will face Duran (Volcano Vista) in the semi-finals.

Still in the hunt for a place on the podium: Monarrez (Chaparral), Sanchez (Santa Teresa), Reyes (Santa Teresa), Korody (Las Cruces), Udero (Las Cruces), Montoya (Las Cruces), Cisneros (Las Cruces), Gonzalez (Las Cruces), Amarro (Las Cruces) and Dante (Organ Mountain)
Girls
Las Cruces High School: Alyssa Sedillo--pinned Chavez (Ruidoso), 2:48; pinned Grobecker (Volcano Vista), 1:07; will face Nararez (Atrisco Heritage) in the semi-finals.

Centennial High School: Emely Gilcrease--Maj. Dec. 17-7 Garcia (West Mesa); pinned Koranyl (Academy), 5:18; will face Rimbert (Atrisco Heritage) in the simi-finals.

Organ Mountain High School: Bethany Sanchez-- dec. 5-4 Bethany Schlinger (ROBE); dec. 7-2 Salas (Centennial); will face Deyapp (Farmington) in the semi-finals.

Santa Teresa: Jennifer Rico--pinned Spitz (Eldorado), 0:16; pinned Gabladon (Moriarty), 2:41; will face Chavez (Del Norte) in the semi-finals.

Still in the hunt for a place on the podium: Atma (Las Cruces), Aguirre (Gadsden), Salas (Centennial), Aguilera (Mayfield) and Buenrostro (Mayfield).
Swimming

The following swimmers managed to make Top-8 (“A” Final) in the corresponding events:

Las Cruces High School [Krizek (30.70), Herrera (32.71), Creusere (29.14), Ayala (24.83)]: Girls 200 yd Medley Relay.
Las Cruces High School [Herrera (26.20), Krizek (25.34), Briske (26.89), Ayala (25.21)]: Girls 200 yd Freestyle Relay.
Kathryn Cruesere (LCHS) Girls 200 yd Freestyle.
Anaeirin Hanan (LCHS) Boys 200 yd Freestyle.
Dara Ayala (LCHS) Girls 50 yd Freestyle.
Anaerin Hanan (LCHS) Boys 500 yd Freestyle
Zoey Herrera (LCHS) Girls 100 yd Breaststroke
Joshua Campion (Centennial) Boys 100 yd Breaststroke
