SANTA FE ─ State and federal income tax returns are due next month, on Wednesday, April 15.

New Mexico residents who don’t owe taxes can still file returns to claim refundable tax credits, resulting in refunded money to the filer. New Mexico offers several valuable tax credits, including credits for parents, working families and low-income taxpayers.

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department allows most taxpayers to securely file state returns for free using the online Taxpayer Access Point (TAP), accessible at https://tap.state.nm.us/. The department’s YouTube page offers step-by-step tutorials on navigating the online portal.

Taxpayers can check the status of their refund on the Taxpayer Access Point anytime. Electronic filings typically result in faster refunds than paper filings.

Filing early also reduces the chance of being affected by a fraudulent return filed in your name.

Taxpayers should stay alert for tax scams. The department will never contact taxpayers by phone unsolicited. The department may contact taxpayers by mail to verify personal income tax returns to combat identity theft.

Any suspicious communications can be reported to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division by emailing Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling the tax fraud hotline at 1-866-457-6789.

Personal income tax forms and instructions are available at https://tax.newmexico.gov.

For filing assistance, the department offers a list of in-person and online filing resources on its online Personal Income Tax Filing Assistance Information page. The department also publishes a list of approved software, including third-party vendor filers, at https://www.tax.newmexico.gov/tax-professionals/e-filing-mandates-overview/software-developers/.
