WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. — Organizers of this weekend’s Bataan Memorial Death March have announced a significant change to the event, citing forecasted extreme heat and limited medical support.

In an update released by leadership at White Sands Missile Range, all participants will complete the 15.6-mile honorary course, rather than the traditional full marathon distance. The decision follows earlier warnings that race-day temperatures could reach the mid-90s—more than 20 degrees above seasonal averages.

According to event leadership, the modification was made after consultation with safety and medical experts, with participant well-being identified as the top priority.

“I’ve made the difficult but necessary decision to modify this year’s event,” said Col. Drew Morgan, senior commander of White Sands Missile Range. “Ultimately, this decision was my responsibility, and I made it with a single overriding priority—your safety.”

While shorter in distance, organizers emphasized that the event will remain physically demanding. Participants will still face more than 15 miles of marching in desert conditions at elevations above 4,000 feet.

The Bataan Memorial Death March is held annually to honor the endurance and sacrifice of U.S. and Filipino soldiers who endured the original Bataan Death March during World War II. Officials stressed that the purpose of the event remains unchanged.

“The heart of this event has never been about the miles,” Morgan said. “It’s about the memorial.”

Participants were previously advised to prepare for extreme conditions, including adjusting hydration strategies, pacing, and gear. Organizers also noted that White Sands Missile Range remains an active military installation under heightened security, and attendees should plan for possible delays at entry points.

Despite the adjustment, the march will proceed as scheduled this weekend, with organizers reaffirming their commitment to both safety and remembrance.
