Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Stillwater, OK, are teaming up with Oklahoma State University and New Mexico State University (NMSU) to develop improved Spanish and Valencia market-type peanut varieties.
ARS is releasing two new Spanish types, Myers’ Matador and Spunner, which offer improved yield and disease resistance. The team is also identifying elite NMSU Valencia breeding lines with early maturity and resistance to Sclerotinia blight for the Southwest — the largest organic peanut production area in the country.

These advancements help farmers by reducing input costs, lowering irrigation needs, and reducing crop risk
