The City of Las Cruces Water Conservation Program will continue its spring “Lush and Lean” workshop series throughout May, offering free public sessions focused on water-wise landscaping, irrigation, and sustainable gardening practices.
Hosted at Las Cruces City Hall Council Chambers, 700 N. Main St., the workshops are designed to help residents make efficient use of limited water resources while creating sustainable outdoor spaces. Sessions run from 5:30–7:30 p.m. and are also available through Zoom.
According to the city, the program is part of broader conservation efforts aimed at sustaining local water supplies through education, outdoor watering regulations, and public outreach.
May 7
Bold Plants for the Zone 8 Garden
Participants will learn how to create structure, texture, and color in desert landscapes using native plants and species adapted to the region’s climate.

Irrigation for Turfgrass Water Conservation
The session will focus on irrigation practices that reduce water demand while maintaining lawn quality, including turfgrass species suited for southern New Mexico.

Pruning Workshop
A hands-on workshop covering pruning techniques for long-term plant sustainability and tree health. The session will take place at Albert Johnson Park in front of Branigan Library. Participants are encouraged to dress for outdoor activity and may bring a chair.

Water Conservation Efforts
The city’s Water Conservation Program also administers outdoor watering regulations and encourages residents to monitor water use through Utility Hawk alerts.
Residents may report water waste through the city’s hotline at 575-528-4444.
