MVCS SonBlazers

The SonBlazers of Mesilla Valley Christian played their way into the semifinals Saturday by beating a tough Tatum team 36-22. They will next travel the four-and-a-half mile drive to Fort Sumner to take on the 3rd ranked Fort Sumner/House football team.

Chaparral High School

The Chaparral Lobos won the second of back-to-back games against the Portales Rams. Having lost their last regular season game to the Rams (44-19), the Class 4A seeding had Chaparral heading right back to have another go at it. The second time, the Lobos came out on top, wining 10-0 to advance to the Class 4A quarterfinals. Chaparral now must travel to Bernalillo to take on the Spartans.

Hatch Valley High School

The Hatch Valley Bears held off Pojoaque Valley to keep their championship run alive. In the close 28-20 game, the Bears managed to earn a rematch against district rival Dexter. The last time the Bears traveled to Dexter, they were handed a 60-6 loss–the worst defeat of the season. They are going to need to flip the script if they want to advance past the quarterfinals.

Mayfield

The Mayfield Trojans are keeping their season alive in impressive fashion, defeating Belen 53-7 to advance to the Class 5A quarterfinals. The Trojans quarterfinals game is a rematch against district rival Deming. The last time the Trojans faced the Wildcats, a tough Deming team squeezed past Mayfield, winning 20-27. Next weeks quarterfinals match may be different. Not only will Mayfield be playing to advance, they will be playing to reach .500 on the season. Sometimes, pride can be a mighty motivator.

The Las Cruces Bulldawgs handled their first round opponent, West Mesa, with little resistance. Now they must travel up north to play Volcano Vista team that beat them 27-24 early in the season.

Centennial High School

The undefeated Centennial Hawks had a first round “Bye”, and will host the Rio Rancho Rams for the second time this season. In the first match-up, the Hawks emerged victorious with a final score of 43-27. The first face off was in September, and it is now November–and a State Championship is on the line.
