Special Weather Statement
…Cold winter conditions expected over the next 24 to 48 hours…
A strong Pacific cold front will be moving out of the Four Corners area and sweep south across the Borderland late tonight into Tuesday morning. The frontal passage will produce gusty north winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph overnight through the Sierra Lakes region/Luna and Dona Ana Counties, and also the Tularosa Basin through El Paso County. Wind gusts will still be brisk in other areas, but not quite as strong. The brisk winds will create apparent temperatures of 5 to 15 degrees in the mountains and 15 to 25 degrees across the lowlands by early Tuesday morning.
While day time temperatures will reach the 40s and lower 50s in the lowlands, the brisk winds will keep the apparent temperature in mostly the 30s and lower 40s across the lowlands. Winds will diminish later Tuesday afternoon, allowing airmass to chill to the coldest temperatures of the season by Wednesday morning. Low temperatures at this time are expected to be around 15 to 25 degrees lowlands and 10 to 20 degrees in the mountains. Apparent temperatures both mornings will be quite similar, trading brisk winds Tuesday for lower ambient temperatures Wednesday.
Wednesday will remain on the cool side before we begin a warmup Thursday, and especially Friday into the weekend.
People are urged to protect outdoor equipment such as exposed pipes, and also to protect/prepare pets for the cold weather.
