Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries after Tuesday Crash

A crash between a vehicle and bicycle on Alameda Boulevard resulted in the death of a 61-year-old man Tuesday evening.

About 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, Las Cruces police and fire were dispatched to the report of a crash near the intersection of north Alameda Boulevard and Harvard Drive. First responders arrived to find a 61-year-old bicyclist unconscious and with critical injuries.

The bicyclist was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as Lorenzo Espinoza, 61, of Las Cruces.

Traffic investigators learned Espinoza was on Alameda Boulevard traveling north in a designated bicycle lane when he was struck from behind by a gray 2017 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 31-year-old man. The driver of the Equinox remained on scene and has been cooperative with the investigation.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this crash. The investigation is ongoing. At this time, no charges have been filed.
