Naomi Slee Named WAC Swimmer of the Week

Junior earns second career weekly honor after perfect weekend versus Grand Canyon.

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference announced its weekly Swimming and Diving awards on Wednesday, Jan. 15. NM State’s Naomi Slee was named Swimmer of the Week by the league, highlighting a solid junior campaign. The third-year Aggie earned her second such award of her career after winning three races in as many attempts.

Naomi Slee | Jr. | Edmonton, Alberta, Canada | Jan. 11 vs. Grand Canyon

  • 1st in 200 free (1:50.98)
  • 1st in 200 back (2:01.57)
  • 1st in 400 free relay (3:24.63) – posted 51.34 split in second leg

Slee had a perfect meet over the weekend, tallying three first-place finishes in as many races. The junior led the Aggies to an impressive 173-127 win over Grand Canyon, solidifying a four-meet winning streak. Slee racked up individual wins in the 200 free (1:50.98) and 200 back (2:01.57). To cap off the day, she swam the second leg of the 400 free relay, guiding the Aggies to a 3:24.63 time in which she took up 51.34 seconds.

In her first campaign, Slee was named 2022-23 WAC Freshman of the Year and earned the same weekly honor on Nov. 9, 2022. As a sophomore, the Edmonton, Alberta, native was a three-time conference bronze medalist; finishing third in the 200 free and 500 free.

Twenty-four days from now, Slee will lead NM State into action on Saturday, Feb. 8 in a road tilt at New Mexico. The rivalry dual with the Lobos will be the Aggies’ final meet of the regular season. The action against UNM is slated to begin at Noon MT in Albuquerque.
