Doña Ana County, NM – Shannon Cherry, Chief of Doña Ana County Fire Rescue, retired effectively Jan. 31, 2025, after 32 years of dedicated and honorable service to the fire service.

Cherry’s decades long career included roles as a volunteer firefighter, career firefighter, fire instructor and fire chief. He is largely credited with securing funding for equipment, fire apparatus, the construction of new stations while remodeling older ones and overseeing the development of a new administration facility.
Deputy Chief Eric Crespin will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is selected.
What a Difference 32 Years Make
In 1993, Live Action Video released a VHS video tape for kids called, “There Goes a Firetruck”. This video explores the life of firefighters in Ontario, California around the time now retired Doña Ana County Fire and Rescue Chief Shannon Cherry began his long career in our broader community.
Recent Big Events in Our Broader Community
Chief Cherry has been witness to many changes and major events in our broader community. Two of the most recent are the Stahmann Farms fire and the signing of the “Mutual Aid Agreement”.
