PALM DESERT, Calif. – The NM State women’s golf team opened up play at the Alice and John Wallace Classic at Monterey Country Club on Saturday morning. With one round in the books, the Aggies find themselves in eighth place on the team leaderboard while Kaylee Chen shot even par to finish the day as the top Aggie and among the top 10.
After Chen bogeyed her first hole of the day, she bounced back to tally four birdies across the next 12 holes and move into contention. She would ultimately shoot a 71 to sit in a tie for 10thplace alongside nine other competitors, including the No. 2 player in the nation Jasmine Koo of Southern California.
Emma Bunch also turned a solid performance in the first round as she finished the day just one shot back of Chen to sit in a tie for 20th among the field of 120 players. Angela Garvin posted a 73 (+2) in her first round of the spring and will begin the second round in a tie for 30th.
NUMBERS OF NOTE
- The Aggies totaled 10 birdies in the first round of the tournament, including two on hole 1, hole 10 and hole 16.
- NM State combined to shoot an average score of 4.13 on the Par 4s today which was good for fifth among all 21 teams in the field.
- The Aggies ultimately finished the day ahead of several talented programs including No. 42 UC Davis (T10), Grand Canyon (T10) and Santa Clara (T13).
The Aggies’ second round will begin at 10:30 a.m. MST with Kaylee Chen going off of hole four, Emma Bunch going off of hole five, Angela Garvin and Camille Pazouki going off of hole six and Alex Armendariz going off of hole seven. Live scoring will be provided by Scoreboard and can be found here.
