ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – NM State struggled to get the bats going on Tuesday night, falling 7-0 to in-state rival New Mexico at Santa Ana Star Field. The Aggies’ (5-3) three-game win streak came to an end as they were held to just two hits in the contest.

Starter Matthew Yarc (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in three innings of work. The NM State bullpen performed well in relief, with Carson Timmons, Cody Carson, and Alejandro Maltos-Garcia combining to allow just one run over the final five innings.
Each of the Aggies’ two hits would come with two outs as Joey Craig logged a single in the top of the third and Mitch Namiecollected a double in the top of the 6th. However, in both cases, the inning would come to an end in the ensuing at-bat. UNM sent out Dayne Pengelly (1-0) who serves as the team’s Friday starter most weekends and he looked the part, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four.
The Aggies remained within striking distance for two innings before the home side posted the game’s first crooked number in the third to break open the game. In the third, the Lobos tallied five hits, including a three-run home run from Jordy Oriach that highlighted a five-run inning.
NM State would later allow one more run in the eighth inning before the game came to a close.
NUMBERS OF NOTE
- With a double, Mitch Namie extended his hitting streak to eight games. Additionally, he now has three doubles this season, including one in each of the last two games.
- The shutout marked the first time that NM State failed to score since March 29, 2024, when it fell 14-0 on the road at Dallas Baptist. In total, the Aggies were shutout just two times last season. This also marks the first time either side was shutout in the Rio Grande Rivalry since the Aggies defeated the Lobos 8-0 on May 16, 2023.
- True freshman Carson Timmons made his collegiate debut against the Lobos and finished the game with three strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk across 2.0 innings.
- Cody Carson collected his first strikeout as an Aggie as he froze four-hole hitter Ethan Ott in the seventh inning.
- Alejandro Maltos-Garcia notched a season-high two strikeouts while pitching just one inning.
