BEAUMONT, Texas – NM State’s late-inning surge wasn’t enough to overcome a fast start from the home side as the Aggies fell to Lamar 11-5 on Tuesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar jumped out to a commanding lead with five runs in the first inning and three more in the second, putting NM State in an early 8-0 hole. The Cardinals capitalized on timely hitting, including a two-run double from Zane Spinn and a two-RBI double by Tab Tracy.

The Aggies found some life in the third inning when Camden Kaufman’s fourth sacrifice fly of the season plated Tommy Meluskey to get NM State on the board. In the fourth, Brandon Forrester worked a bases-loaded walk to push across another run, trimming the deficit to 9-2.

NM State’s most promising rally came in the sixth when Gianni Horvat and Joey Craig each reached base, setting up Steve Solorzano’s two-RBI single to pull the Aggies within five runs. Craig added an RBI triple in the seventh to make it 9-5, but Lamar responded with two more runs in the bottom half to extend its lead.

On the mound, starter Ferny Barreda allowed five runs on five hits in the first before being relieved by Hazen Wright. Wright allowed four runs over two innings, while Chris Daniels and Jaden Davis combined to allow just two runs over the final five frames, keeping the Aggies within reach.

Offensively, Solorzano led the Aggies with three hits and two RBIs, while Craig contributed a hit, two walks, and an RBI. Kaufman added two hits and an RBI as well.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • With a combined 10 strikeouts on Tuesday night, the Aggies equaled their season high. This was fueled by freshman Jaden Davis who ended the night with a career high six strikeouts across just three innings of work.
  • For the 12th time this season, the Aggies recorded multiple extra-base hits in a single game as both Steve Solorzano and Camden Kaufman tallied doubles while Joey Craig tallied the first triple of his career.
  • Both Mitch Namie and Brandon Forrester saw their extended hitting streaks come to an end as Namie’s streak concluded at 15 games while Forrester’s streak ended at seven games.
  • Steve Solorzano recorded his third three-hit game of the season and equal number of multi-RBI games.
  • The Aggie defense turned its 14th and 15th double plays of the season which ranks fourth among CUSA teams this year.
