LAS CRUCES, N.M. – On a night filled with momentum swings, crucial at-bats and late-inning drama, NM State’s valiant comeback effort came up just short in a 12–10 loss to in-state rival New Mexico at Presley Askew Field on Tuesday.

The Aggies found themselves in a deep hole early, trailing 6–0 after a rocky first inning that saw the Lobos benefit from four walks and a trio of hits. However, the Aggies also exhibited patience at the plate in the first as four walks and one hit allowed the Aggies to produce three runs of their own to stay within striking distance.

Unfortunately, UNM’s offense continued its hot start with three more runs in the second inning. The Aggies used back-to-back hits from Steve Solorzano and Mitch Namie to generate two runs in response.

Steady pressure at the plate kept NM State in the game, but the Lobos built an 11-6 advantage through five innings.

Trailing 12–6 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Aggie offense exploded for a four-run rally, capped by a two-run single from Austin Corbett that drew the Aggies within three runs. Later, Brandon Forrester drew a bases-loaded walk to push across another run and make it a two-run game. NM State loaded the bases again but stranded the tying run at third.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Aggies put the pressure back on with a leadoff bunt single by Namie but were unable to bring him home and ultimately dropped their third straight contest.
