Why Our Monuments Matter
National Monuments across the country are historical and culturally significant places for communities. That is why decades of advocacy and organizing was dedicated to protecting our lands–people have chosen to keep these landscapes intact for generations to come.
The Trump administration has signaled their intentions of selling our parks and other public lands to billionaires and big corporations, cutting off access to national public lands and destroying wildlife habitats. At the same time, they are attempting to whitewash the history and stories told by these places. Removing these monument protections is part of the broader scheme to privatize public lands – and erase Americans’ collective natural resources that were first protected to be passed down for generations to come.
Day of Action
Here in Southern New Mexico, we will be gathering at Tortugas Mountain to tell the Trump Administration “Hands Off Our National Monument!” We are encouraging folks to take a group photo with signs like:
- “Hands Off National Monuments”
- “Not for Sale / ¡No Se Vende!”
- …or any creative messages people bring.
For social media posts, we encourage folks to tag the official accounts of the White House, DOI, and Secretary Burgum. Use the hashtags #MonumentsforAll #HandsOFF #NotforSale.
- We are also asking folks to carpool as we are expecting a good turnout.
- Please follow the directions of volunteer marshals (individuals in the fluorescent vests!)
