The southern region of Doña Ana County is now better equipped to handle emergencies with the official opening of the new Fire Station 2 following a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, March 13. The event marked the presence of what now will serve as a hub for training and infrastructure for the southern part of Doña Ana County.

The ceremony, attended by community members, local officials, and representatives from area fire departments, celebrated the end of months of planning, construction, and dedication. The new fire station, strategically located to serve the southern region’s growing population, is aimed at providing faster emergency services to residents in need.
The ceremony was highlighted by a traditional “Wet Down” ceremony, a symbolic gesture to welcome the new station into service. Attendees of the ceremony were treated to a tour of the new station. Because local school districts are on Spring Break, young children engaged with firefighters, took turns sitting in fire trucks and received Junior Firefighter parting gifts.
“This station represents a huge milestone for us, and especially the services we can provide for Doña Ana County,” Fire Chief Shannon Cherry said. “This station was designed to house career firefighter staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and to support other regional emergency response. Over the next few weeks, the final touches will be added, with an expected full operation date of May 1.”
Commissioner Diana Murillo, along with other County officials, presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing the station’s official opening to the public. In her remarks, Commissioner Murillo emphasized the importance of the new fire station in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and expressed gratitude to all those involved in its development.
The state-of-the-art facility is equipped with the latest technology and resources to support firefighters and emergency responders in their critical mission. With its strategic location and enhanced capabilities, the new fire station is expected to improve response times and effectively address emergencies ranging from fires to medical incidents and natural disasters.
