Las Cruces firefighters extinguished a blaze in the back of an abandoned house Friday evening.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Friday, May 17, firefighters responded to a structure fire at a house on the 1700 block of north Mesquite Street. The first-arriving crew found the fire burning in the rear of what turned out to be an abandoned house.

Firefighters attacked the fire, confined it to a relatively small area and had it extinguished within minutes of arrival. Firefighters searched the house and found it to be abandoned and unoccupied.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
