The New Mexico State University Foundation has named Patrick E. Stewart as its new vice president of philanthropy and alumni relations. He will assume his role July 29.

Previously, Stewart was executive director of development for the University of California San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering. There, he served the academic goals of nearly 300 faculty and more than 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students in six departments.

In just two years, Stewart and his team secured more than $65 million for endowed chairs, new construction of buildings and renaming for the Jacobs School. They also ignited dozens of key partnerships enabling future department growth and raised more than $25 million to name the Department of Bioengineering, $21 million to name the Department of Chemical and Nano Engineering, and $18 million for endowed chairs.

“I’ve devoted my career to helping create enduring relationships, fostering multisector collaboration, and funding key programs from arts to engineering,” Stewart said. “I believe education is the great equalizer and a source of empowerment that builds knowledge, instills confidence, and collapses opportunity barriers. I am inspired to make even greater contributions at NMSU.”

Stewart has served on leadership teams that have realized multi-billion-dollar philanthropic impacts at top academic institutions in the U.S. and U.K. Before his UCSD appointment, he held university advancement leadership roles at the University of Miami, Imperial College London, the University of New Orleans, and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of California Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in negotiation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding from California State University.

“We are so excited to welcome Patrick to our dynamic team as we continue our pursuit of excellence,” said Sylvia Acosta, CEO of the NMSU Foundation. “Patrick will leverage his deep expertise to develop high-potential teams, build alumni and community engagement, drive transformative funding efforts, and collaborate with university partners to elevate NMSU’s recognition on a statewide, national and global scale for our alumni.”
