KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On Monday morning, the NABC announced the recipients of the 2023-24 NABC Honors Court and Team Academic Excellence Awards with the Aggies making the list for both.
The NABC Team Academic Excellence Award represents achievement in the classroom by men’s basketball teams and recognizes men’s basketball programs that completed the 2023-24 year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, however, includes junior, senior, and graduate student men’s basketball players who finished with a year cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
After finishing up last season, the Aggies finished with an overall team GPA of 3.09 and a 3.26 GPA during the spring semester. Three of the four returning players finished with a cumulative GPA of above 3.0 with the highest being 3.30 produced by Christian Cook. Of the schools that received recognition, NM State and Liberty were the only two Conference USA schools to make the list.
The Aggies also managed to have four athletes make the NABC Honors Court List, with two being returners for the 2024-25 season. The student-athletes that made the list were Kaosi Ezeagu (Gr.), Christian Cook (Sr.), Tanahj Pettway (Sr.), and Christopher Biekeu (Gr.).
QUOTABLE | Head Coach Jason Hooten
“I am so proud of this award that our team has earned. Coming into this past year, there were a lot of uncertainties on so many different fronts, but from the leadership of Mario Moccia and all our academic staff, our student-athletes achieved so much success. The commitment that New Mexico State University has made to academics speaks volumes. Our coaches deserve a lot of credit along with our academic advisors Emily Ancira, Rick Chapa and James Hall. Emily has helped build our academic culture within the men’s basketball program and we can’t wait to see this continue and grow.”
