A Las Cruces Digest Editorial Report:
Competing naked is widely accepted as the only way the Greeks would perform in the original Olympic games. Lore has it that Orsippus, winner of the Stadion race in 720 BC, tore free of his loin cloth because he believed the garb to be a distraction. 5th Century BC historian, Thucydides, credited the Spartans with the inspiration for running in the raw.
It is only fitting that USA Track & Field would bestow this honor on New Mexico’s very own Chase Jackson, but when Jackson arrived in Paris with nothing to wear, she did not understand the honor bestowed upon her. The Daily Mail reports: “As tears filled her eyes, she admitted that she had been flooded with sadness for the past ‘hour’ because they didn’t have anything in [her] size.”
Jackson was ready for Paris, and having missed the Tokyo games due to long COVID, she boarded the plane in America with her eyes firmly set on medals. When she landed in Paris and discovered she had nothing to wear to the Opening Ceremonies, that gleam in her eyes turned to tears. The public outcry was fierce as Americans took collective umbrage at the “administrative error” that caused hurt to one of our own.
Proper-fitting attire has since been afforded Jackson–in time for her competitive debut, early Thursday morning. We are confident she will be wearing a uniform, proud in its red, white and blue.
However she is attired, Las Cruces Digest is rooting for Chase Jackson. If we were entrepreneurially-minded, we would launch a new athletic wear company with only plus sizes. The logo would read:
Shot Put Naked
It would be fitting (pun intended) of such a classical Olympian. Regardless the outcome of today’s competition, we are so very proud of you, Chase Jackson.
