Three to Watch for the Next Three Days: Womens Golf in Paris

Golf in the Olympics is very similar to what we are used to in our broader community with two distinctions. 1) There is no “cut” after the second round of 18–all competitors play 72 holes. 2) There are sudden-death tie breaker rounds for all medals.

Both of the “new” rules make for an exciting competition, especially when we have so many to root for. Here are the standings of our favored players after the first round (played earlier, today):

French Golfer, Celine Boutier, took full advantage of her home course, jumping out to a three stroke lead with a -7 on day one.

Finland

The golfer we are most interested in watching, however, is Ursula Wikström of Finland. Wikström managed a single birdy, with three bogeys and 3 double bogeys–the last double bogey coming on 18. While it is never good to end a bad day on a bad hole, it provides a premise to a story that those who live in our broader community understand all too well. Wikström is now the underdog of choice, and us Aggies have a way of rooting for our own… especially when rooting for the underdog.
