Today, August 17, 2024, the Hatch Valley Bears Boys and Girls Soccer teams square off against Deming. These are the first high school contests in our broader community for this school year.
A Las Cruces Digest Report
While Las Cruces Public Schools is kicking off rivalry week for the Mayfield/Cruces game (see Las Cruces Public Schools kicks off the 2024 Football Season and Mayfield/Cruces Rivalry Week with “Rivalry Renewed–the Rivalry Games”), this Saturday, the Hatch Valley Bears are taking to the soccer pitch for both Boys and Girls matches.
Girls
The girls start the day early, at 9am when they face the Wildcats of Deming to start the season. The Wildcats are a Class 4A program, so by enrollment numbers alone, the Bears are going to have a challenging match for their home opener. Last year, the Wildcats finished 7-12-1 (3-2-1), earning them second in District 3/4A. Last year, the Bears went 7-13(5-3) and also finished second in District 3/4/5, Class A/3A.
Boys
The boys will also take on the Wildcats immediately following the girls’ match. The boys’ match is slated to begin at 11am. The Bears went 8-11-1(5-2-1) last year, and earned second in District 3/4, Class A/3A. The Deming Wildcats went 9-9-2 (1-4-1), ending up third in District 3/4A.
