During the Labor Day weekend, the New Mexico State Police participated in the Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) operation across all roadways within the state. The goal of the traffic initiative is to increase motorist safety and reduce the number of crashes through a strong law enforcement presence.

Because of the increased volume of traffic during the holiday, NMSP increased its patrol presence during this initiative on roadways throughout all State Police districts on the busiest travel days of the Labor Day weekend, specifically Friday, August 30, through Monday, September 2, 2024.
The operation resulted in State Police officers issuing over 2,300 traffic citations (133 of which were for lack of seat belt usage) and arresting 30 impaired drivers statewide. Officers investigated 37 crashes, one of which was fatal. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau issued 268 commercial vehicle citations and conducted 686 commercial vehicle inspections.
The safety of motorists is a top priority of the New Mexico State Police, and officers will continue holiday travel operations throughout the year. We encourage the public to drive safely and obey all laws while traveling the motorways of New Mexico.
As part of a broader effort, New Mexico State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Bureau conducted operation in southern NM.
On August 19 through August 29, 2024, the New Mexico State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Bureau conducted an operation in southern New Mexico to enhance public safety.
Over the course of the ten-day operation, 48 level 1 inspections were conducted, 968 level 2 inspections were conducted, and 244 level 3 inspections were conducted. Officers issued a total of 204 citations.
Officers inspected the CMV’s to make sure they were in compliance and in safe operating condition, as well as the drivers’ paperwork and documents to ensure they were correct and current.
Officers placed 168 CMVs out of service and 38 drivers out of service.
CMV officers conduct these operations to make sure that CMV’s and drivers who travel through our state follow all laws and are in current safe operating condition so that they can continue their mission to their final destination.
