The STEM+ Education and Research Institute at New Mexico State University will a host statewide conference to bring together K-12 and disciplinary-based STEM education researchers and practitioners from across the state’s higher education institutions to share evidence, best practices and research.

The 2024 SERI Conference, “Translating Research to Practice – Elevating STEM Education in New Mexico,” will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Las Cruces Convention Center, 680 E. University Ave. There is no cost to attend, but online registration is required.
“We are excited to host the second annual SERI Conference,” said Susan Brown, SERI interim director. “With a theme on translating research to practice, we are inviting educators from across the state to share best practices, while also learning new ideas that can elevate their teaching and research endeavors directly in the classroom.”
The conference features guest speaker John Garcia, senior adviser for the U.S. Department of Education. Formerly the deputy of Strategic Partnerships and Innovation for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Garcia also served as president of its philanthropic arm, the Greater LA Education Foundation. Previously, he was the senior program officer for education at the California Community Foundation. Garcia has served as a consultant for the National Governors Association, Jobs for the Future and the Southern Regional Education Board. He also was a policy analyst for the White House Initiative for Educational Excellence for Hispanics and resident fellow at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Garcia began his career in education as a school counselor and later served as a director for the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education.
Additional speakers include Gwen Warniment, Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation President and CEO; Sara Brownell, STEM professor at Arizona State University; and Danielle Maxwell, STEM professor at the University of Detroit.
NMSU is accepting abstracts from university STEM faculty, staff, graduate students and K-12 administrators and teachers until Sept. 27. Submissions will be considered to present a poster or microbrew sharing session. Questions can be directed to Brown at susanbro@nmsu.edu.
