UPDATE POSTED WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9 at 3:38 PM
Doña Ana County Fire Rescue (DAFR) remains on scene at Stahmann Farms, where crews continue working to fully put out flames and reduce the smoke caused by the fire that broke out Monday night in the pecan storage facility. As of 6:55 a.m., firefighters were still working diligently to control hotspots within the building.
While the fire has been contained to the original structure, heavy smoke continues to rise from the site due to the collapsed concrete roof. The high heat levels are still preventing demolition contractors from safely accessing the building’s interior.
DAFR will continue to monitor the situation closely, applying water to prevent reignition and ensuring life safety for everyone on-site. Nearby residents are once again advised to avoid exposure to the smoke, especially those with respiratory conditions.
Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
Original Post:
The fire started in the pecan storage facility, which contained 380,000 pounds of pecans. Despite the fire burning for nearly 24 hours, crews have successfully contained it to the original building.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of DAFR there is no immediate danger to surrounding facilities. However, the fire has continued to produce significant smoke, and the building’s concrete roof collapsed during the incident. The intense heat has prevented demolition contractors from safely opening the walls to allow the burning material to be spread out.
“Our crews are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of everyone on-site and to prevent the fire from starting up again,” Fire Chief Shannon Cherry said. “We will remain on scene and continue applying water to the fire until the area is secure.”
Nearby residents, especially those sensitive to smoke, are encouraged to avoid the area and stay indoors as much as possible.
No injuries have been reported at this time. DAFR will remain on scene until any fire danger is removed and life safety concerns for contractors are addressed.
