As we await the announcement of the State Championship brackets, here are the standings at the end of regular season play.

A Las Cruces Digest Report

Class AAAAA (5A) Large School

Selection and seeding for this year’s Class 5A State Championship is going to be heartbreaking for some in our broader community with five of the six teams in District 3 finishing with winning records, overall–and four of the six finishing .500 or better in District 3/5A play. Simply said, District 3/5A is a tough and competitive district–the kind of district that ranking algorithms simply cannot account for. Yes, the Lady Bulldawgs dominated, and this accomplishment should not be diminished by an erroneous strength-of-schedule number. District 3/5A is as tough a conference as any in New Mexico, and our local teams will have an opportunity to demonstrate this fact come October 29th.

Las Cruces High SchoolThe Lady Bulldawgs captured District 3/5A with in-district perfection rattling off ten straight wins, and increasing their overall streak to 13. The only two losses suffered were in overtime fashion: a 2-1 double-overtime heart breaker at home against a tough Cleveland team, and a 2-1 overtime loss in Hobbs. At the end of the season, Cleveland finished second in their 5A district to 4th ranked Volcano Vista, while Hobbs topped their district ranked 5th in New Mexico Class 5A futbol. Currently, the Lady Bulldawgs are ranked 3rd in Class 5A in the latest MaxPreps rankings, standing in defiance of Eldorado and La Cueva (two Albuquerque schools with decidedly poorer regular season records).

As schools from our broader community have demonstrated time and time, again, MaxPreps rankings can be thrown out the window once Championship play begins. The Lady Bulldawgs have their eye on the prize… the 2024 State Championship. And they may see it clearer than any other team in the state.

MayfieldThe Lady Trojans cannot be overlooked, finishing a tough district schedule in second place. The Mayfield Girl’s squad tied top-ranked Eldorado early in the season, and fought hard to finish district with a 6-2-2 record.

Organ MountainFinishing the regular season 12-8, the Lady Knights have demonstrated their ability to play with the best teams in New Mexico. When they show up, they are capable of competing against the best.

Centennial High SchoolThe Lady Hawks from Centennial have suffered a late-season skid that was crushing to behold. They lost or tied 5 of their last 6 matches and steadily dropped from contention in District 3/5A standings. Their only win since October 3rd came against a struggling Alamogordo team on October 10th.

Gadsden High SchoolGadsden finished the year with a 10-9-1 overall record, but struggled in the very competitive District 3/5A. The Lady Panthers managed only two home wins in district, the first against Centennial and the second against cellar dweller Alamogordo. Their season ending pride match against the Tigers ended in a two-all tie.

Santa Teresa High SchoolThe Desert Warriors of Santa Teresa finished District 3/4A play with an unblemished 6-0 record, and losing only four all season. Of the four matches lost, three were to up-class teams and one was to down-class district champion Ruidoso. Hailing from the southernmost school in the state of New Mexico, Santa Teresa is often overlooked. When October 29th rolls around, overlooking this squad would prove to be a big mistake.

Chaparral High SchoolThe Lady Lobos never could catch a break this season. Chaparral managed a perfect winless record recording only three goals for the entire season. Their season included four 10-0 routs and at least one match forfeited. Sometimes, the battles that matter moat take place before a team ever reaches the pitch. It was that kind of year for the Chaparral Lobos. Finishing this season with strong showings against district rivals Deming and Silver proved to be the victories taken away from this season. Those victories may not show up in the record books, but Las Cruces Digest recognizes them, all the same.

Hatch Valley High SchoolSmall school soccer is exemplified by the Hatch Valley Bear’s composite district hobbled together by the NMAA. Despite a lackluster 4-12 overall record, the Lady Bears ended district play ranked 12th in New Mexico Class A/3A. Most of the Lady Bear’s non-district competition was against up-class local schools. It is a blessing, however, to see our state activities association working so hard to allow smaller schools to offer competition to their students.
