USDA continues our efforts to lower costs and increase competition for American producers and families by expanding domestic fertilizer and meat and poultry production. Thanks to commitments by the Biden-Harris Administration to increase homegrown fertilizer production and expand meat and poultry processing capacity, this week USDA announced over $140 million to accomplish these goals.
On Wednesday, Deputy Secretary Torres Small visited Dramm Corp. in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to announce over $120 million for six fertilizer production projects through the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP). Dramm Corp. previously received an award through FPEP, which President Biden and USDA created to combat rising fertilizer prices, which more than doubled between 2021 and 2022 due to a variety of factors such as war in Ukraine and a lack of competition in the fertilizer industry.
While in the Badger State, the Deputy Secretary also visited a meat processing facility in Kaukauna to highlight an additional $20.2 million for 26 projects through the Local Meat Capacity (Local MCap) grant program. Funded by the American Rescue Plan, Local MCap expands processing capacity within the meat and poultry industry, leading to more competition for producers and lower food prices for consumers.
