A Letter from Organ Mountain Desert Peaks: OMDP RMP Comments Due Friday, July 5th

Hello friends,

We just wanted to send out a quick reminder to you all on the fast approaching deadline for public comments on the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Resource Management Plan.

A Resource Management Plan (RMPS) is a guiding document for our public land managers on how to best protect our landscapes based on community input, and the Proclamation that establish the OMDP National Monument to begin with! RMPs are in place for years, potentially decades, so this document also has to be proactive on incoming threats to our cherished landscape.

The draft plan has multiple proposed alternatives (A-D), with A being the “No-Action Alternative”, and maintains most of the current management practices BLM is executing. The BLM’s preferred alternative is C.

FOMDP believes that the proposed Alternative B is the better plan to manage OMDP for decades to come. Alternative B would establish more Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs), prioritize habitat restoration, while still taking into consideration the growing recreation found in the monument.
