NM State saw key victories in both singles and doubles play, with returners Anna Pinaieva and Lisa Zhu advancing to the Round of 16 in the main singles draw. In doubles action, Zhu and freshman Montana Parkinson-Lubold progressed to the Round of 16, becoming the Aggies’ last remaining team in the main draw.
In the Round of 64, Whitney Moon earned a hard-fought victory, overcoming Nevada’s Marlene Foerster 6-2, 7-6, 6-4. Anna Pinaieva also made a strong start, defeating Hana Becirovic of Denver 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, while Montana Parkinson-Lubold fell to Betina Tokac (Colorado) 6-4, 6-2.
In the Round of 32, Pinaieva continued her winning form, edging out New Mexico’s Maud Vandeputte 7-6, 6-4. Lisa Zhu delivered a composed performance to defeat Pia Rebec (Colorado) 6-4, 6-3, 7-5. Whitney Moon’s run came to an end with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Boise State’s Zdena Safarova. Meanwhile, Parkinson-Lubold competed in the consolation draw, where she was bested by Zuzanna Szczepanska 6-3, 6-3.
In the doubles Round of 32, Zhu and Parkinson-Lubold earned a solid 8-5 victory over Wyoming’s Borodina and Mashabayeva, keeping their hopes alive in the main draw. However, Pinaieva and Kelsey Nemeth fell to UTEP’s El Sayed and Rebec, 8-2.
Action at the Mountain Regional Championships will resume tomorrow morning.
