Aggies Post Fourth Consecutive Top Three Finish

NM State places second as two Aggies land top 10 finishes at GCU Invitational.

PHOENIX – In what was the Aggies’ second trip to the state of Arizona this spring, NM State secured a second-place finish after they submitted a combined score of 853 (+1) at the two-day event. The Aggie men finished only behind host Grand Canyon who ended the week 12 strokes under par.

Individually, NM State was paced by sixth year senior Aidan Thomas who closed out the tournament with a 70 (-1) to end the tournament four strokes below par and in a tie for fourth place. Following a six-hole playoff, Grand Canyon’s Tommaso Zorzetto and Cal State Fullerton’s Tegan Andrews would be crowned co-champions.

NM State’s Alexandre Bauduin also turned in a top 10 finish at GCU Golf Course as he posted a 71 (E) on Wednesday to finish with an even 213 for the week which earned him a tie for 10th place alongside three others.

Freshman Mateo Payán carded a 70 (-1) to make a massive leap on the scoreboard, moving 17 spots up and into a tie for 24th as he finished the week at three-over. Payán was followed by the Aggies’ lone individual competitor Anthony Lara (+4) who managed a T32 finish in what was just his second tournament of the season.

Additionally, Javier Delgadillo finished six-over to place in a tie for 42nd while Ethan Klose (+8) secured a tie for 51st.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • Aidan Thomas posted his second top 10 finish of the season and 14th of his lengthy Aggie career. With a final score of 209, he matched his best 54-hole score of the season and best since the Aggies’ home tournament.
  • Alexandre Bauduin also recorded his second top 10 finish of the year while this week marks his fifth top 10 finish of his three-year Aggie career.
  • Mateo Payán secured his fourth top 25 placement of his freshman campaign and the second of his last three starts.
  • With 37 pars this week, Aidan Thomas ranked second among all players in the field.

The Aggies will return to Arizona next week for the Arizona Thunderbirds Invitational slated to begin on Monday morning. The 54-hole event hosted by the University of Arizona will take place at the Tucson Country Club.
