Immunizations protect children from serious diseases, including measles. This week, April 22-29 is National Infant Immunization Week, which is the perfect time to remind families to get children caught up on vaccines.
The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) encourages families to stay on track for their children’s recommended vaccinations. Vaccinations are proven to greatly reduce the presence of deadly and harmful disease within communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 4 million deaths worldwide are prevented each year by childhood vaccination.
“NMHealth encourages families to discuss staying up to date on childhood vaccinations with a health professional,” said Andrea Romero, Immunization Program Manager. “Together we can raise awareness and spread the importance of timely immunization. On-schedule vaccinations play a vital role in protecting children and communities from serious disease.”
For older children in New Mexico, “vaccine catch up” events, where children can get their back-to-school vaccines, will take place between July 6 and Aug. 17, 2024. More information on locations of participating sites throughout the state will be announced later this summer. The U.S. has a long-standing vaccine safety system that ensures vaccines are as safe as possible. As new information and science becomes available, vaccine recommendations are monitored, updated and improved.
NMHealth.org has the 2024-2025 school and daycare immunization requirements already posted. As many school districts are starting school earlier in the year, this link will be helpful for parents to review before their children return to class or enter a daycare.
To know what vaccinations your child has already received, visit https://vaxview.doh.nm.gov or call 1-833-882-6454, during their hours of operation between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Though closed 12 to 1 p.m. for lunch, customers may leave a voicemail and receive a call back regarding immunization records.
