There’s a saying, “The darkest nights bring the brightest stars.”

That adage proved true earlier this year when a Las Cruces woman suffered a critical medical event at her home and died shortly thereafter at Mountainview Regional Medical Center. The woman’s family – her husband, son and daughter-in-law – delivered a heartfelt letter to the City to express their gratitude for the first responders who displayed, “the dignity and care she deserved in her final moments.”

The letter reads, in part, “We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the individuals below, whose commitment to their work provided (mom) with the dignity and care she deserved in her final moments. Their efforts went beyond duty, offering us not only medical expertise but also genuine humanity during an incredibly difficult time.”

The family wrote that as life-saving measures were being attempted at Mountainview, the firefighters went above and beyond to care for their four-year-old grandson. The firefighters, “took him under their wing,” allowing him to explore their fire truck, watch a medevac helicopter lift off and providing comfort, “during an incredibly difficult and confusing time for him.”

“For their professionalism, kindness and unwavering support we extend our deepest gratitude,” the letter continued. “The emergency service personnel of Las Cruces embody the very best of what it means to serve, and our family will always be thankful for their extraordinary efforts.”

The family wishes to thank LCPD officers Gage Adler, Jesus Rodriguez and Sgt. Manny Melendez. LCFD personnel thanked by the family include firefighters Michael Conover, Steve Alexander, Ricardo Munoz, Nicky Palma, Eric Miller, Isaac Marin, Ariana Reyes, Juan Joseph Ytuarte and Battalion Chief Cody Haver.

The City of Las Cruces, including all personnel from the Las Cruces Fire Department and the Las Cruces Police Department, extend their deepest sympathy to this family and wish to thank them for sharing their bittersweet experience. They experienced Cariño and graciously responded with warmth and gratitude.
