Las Cruces police are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred Tuesday near the intersection of Seventeenth Street and Picacho Avenue.

Shortly before noon on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, police were dispatched to the report of an altercation resulting in a stabbing on north Seventeenth Street, just south of Picacho Avenue. First responders arrived to find a 26-year-old man suffering from at least one stab wound.
The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
His assailant fled from the area on foot. Investigators are attempting to identify the suspect, locate him and determine what led to the altercation.

A portion of the intersection where the incident occurred is temporarily closed to traffic while police gather evidence and map the scene. Police encourage commuters to find an alternate route around the intersection.
