Breaking: Task Force Investigates Thursday Night Officer Involved Shooting

Las Cruces police and the Officer-involved Incident Task Force are investigating a shooting that injured an armed man shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.

Information is limited for now as the investigation is in its infancy.

Police were called to the report of a man with a gun on the 500 block of south Main Street. The first officer to arrive located the suspect who led police on a short foot pursuit.

During the pursuit at least one round was discharged and struck the suspect. The suspect went to the ground on the 800 block of south Main Street and police located a firearm near where the man fell.

The suspect was detained and transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries are unknown.

The LCPD officer was not injured during the incident.

As is standard procedure, the officer will be placed on administrative leave pending further findings from the investigation.

The shooting is being investigated by the Officer-involved Incident Task Force which includes detectives from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police.

No other information is available at this time.
