C-USA Rival and No. 25 FIU Women’s Tennis Defeats Miami to Close Out ITA Kickoff

FIU downed the Miami Hurricanes for the second time in a week’s span.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — FIU’s women’s tennis program edged past Miami 4-3 on Sunday to close out the ITA Kickoff.

The Panthers defeated the Hurricanes for the second time in two weekends, notching four victories in singles to earn a 4-3 win. FIU dropped the doubles point to Miami, but responded to take four-of-six singles matches.

Ekaterina Khairutdinova swept her opponent at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 to move to 3-0 on the season. Oyinlomo Quadre also secured a straight-set win over her competitor at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-4. 

Petja Drame battled to a two-set win at No. 6 singles to tie the match at 3-all. Katerina Mandelikova, playing in the fourth singles slot, won her opening set 6-3, but fell 6-1 in the second. Mandelikova battled to a 7-5 win in the third to clinch the match for FIU. 

UP NEXT

FIU will take on Miami tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 26, for the second time this year. First serve will be at 11 a.m.
