This President’s Day weekend, our broader community will have the opportunity to tune in to nine NCAA Division I softball games taking place right here in Las Cruces. See the full schedule of Troy Cox Classic games, below.
Listening to baseball on the radio is a century-old tradition of American sportsmanship. On August 5, 1921, Pittsburgh’s KDKA broadcaster Harold Arlin called the Phillies vs. Pirates game. The worry surrounding the radio broadcasting of baseball was that the games would be “too boring”. What was discovered was how listeners enjoyed the background competition that did not require their undivided attention. It might be argued that radio broadcasts of baseball games poured the foundation of what we now so casually call multitasking.
Softball can be an even more exciting listen. If you can’t make it out to the ballpark, tune in to some great softball this weekend.

The Teams…
Our NMSU Aggies
The Aggies are 4-2 coming into the Troy Cox Classic. That is the best overall record of any team in the tournament. In their first six games, the Aggies have demonstrated an ability to swing away, holding a top spot in NCAA DI Slugging .
Montana
The Grizzlies will be trying to break a 4-game skid, picking up a couple of games in El Paso before joining the Troy Cox Classic.
#17 Nebraska
Nebraska enters Troy Cox Classic play with a 3-2 record. Both losses were to ranked opponnents (#13 Texas Tech and #24 Mississippi State). Their losses shouldn’t be considered and indication of their ability to compete against ranked opponents. Their opening game was a win over #4 Tennessee.
Norther Colorado
The Bears had a slow start to the season, so far (1-3); however, they will be entering the Troy Cox fresh off an 8-4 win over Conference USA contender, Louisiana Tech. (See: LA Tech Bulldogs Take Down No. 4 Oklahoma State 6-1)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
The Islanders came out of last week’s Bearkat Classic on the short end, finishing their 2025 debut with a 2-3 overall record. One notable loss was their season opener against UNM (0-8 in 5 inn.). A notable win was their last game against Conference USA rival and tournament host, Sam Houston (4-2).
