“Doña Ana County’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program was a lifeline for thousands of people during and after the pandemic,” Board Chair Christopher Schaljo-Hernandez said. “These funds made it possible for us to help families remain safely housed and together during a time of uncertainty. We are proud to have supported our community and grateful for the grant funds.”

Throughout 2021 and 2022, the county received a $34 million grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury to pay rent and utility, as part of a national effort to help renters facing financial hardships resulting from pandemic.

Overall, the ERAP program distributed almost $28 million to 2,602 households that faced economic challenges as layoffs and reduced pay impacted them when businesses closed or reduced hours of operation.

To qualify for assistance, residents were required to show how the pandemic impacted their loss of income. At the conclusion of the program, the County reallocated remaining funds to support housing stability through other community partners, as is allowed by the grant.

Doña Ana County thanks all the partners, community organizations, temporary and permanent staff who contributed to the program’s success. The program was funded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
