Feigin Hauls in CUSA Athlete of the Week Honors

For the first time in the history of the program, an NM State men’s tennis player has earned Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors. After leading the Aggies in a win last Sunday, Itay Feigin picked up the program’s first weekly honor since joining the conference last summer.

Feigin, a junior from Ashdod, Israel, shined in the Aggies’ 4-3 win over Lubbock Christian at the NM State Tennis Center on Sunday, April 7. In the victory, Feigin was the lone Aggie to secure wins in both doubles and singles action.

In doubles, he produced a 6-4 win over LCU’s Mattia Ghedin and Braden Tipton while playing alongside teammate Ricardo Mercado. This would also represent the Aggies’ lone doubles win against the Chaps.

Later, Feigin appeared on line No. 1 for Head Coach Carlos Vargas and the Aggies. After falling via tiebreaker to LCU’s top player in the opening set, Feigin bounced back to take sets two and three in commanding fashion. After earning break point early in both sets, Feigin went on to win the second set 6-2 before sealing the deal with a 6-1 win in the third and final set.

Feigin’s singles victory also helped cap off a furious comeback from the Aggies after beginning the match with a three-point deficit as the result at No. 1 represented the Aggies’ match-clinching point. This win also signified Feigin’s first win at No. 1 as he has spent the majority of the season playing on line No. 2.

With the pair of victories, Feigin now holds five wins in both singles and doubles play this spring – eclipsing his season total from last season with two matches remaining on the schedule.

Feigin and the Aggies will return to action this Saturday as they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to take on I-25 rival New Mexico at the Lobo Tennis Club. The match versus the Lobos is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
