Las Cruces police will provide free etching of vehicle identification numbers to automobile windows on Saturday.

The crime prevention event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Pep Boys, 1203 E. Lohman Ave.
VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft. Etching the vehicle’s VIN onto multiple areas of a vehicle reduces the value of a stolen vehicle and increases the likelihood that a stolen vehicle can be identified and recovered.
Most insurance companies encourage VIN etching, and some provide discounts for vehicles that are etched.
