If the taxpayer has already filed, they can check their refund status using the “Where’s My Refund” tool on TAP—no account is needed. Refunds can take up to 12 weeks, though most arrive sooner.

SANTA FE – New Mexico income tax returns for the 2024 tax year are due Tuesday, April 15.

Taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically, either through IRS Direct File, using TAP, or through a commercial service. Filing electronically minimizes delays in processing, results in faster refunds and protects against fraudulent activity.

2024 tax year is the first year New Mexico is part of the free IRS Direct File program, which allows an estimated 300,000 qualifying New Mexicans to file their state and federal returns at no cost.

If the taxpayer has already filed, they can check their refund status using the “Where’s My Refund” tool on TAP—no account is needed. Refunds can take up to 12 weeks, though most arrive sooner.

Creating a TAP account allows the taxpayer to file for free, view past returns, and track the status of their return. A “pending” status means the return has been received and is awaiting processing. Submitting a second return will cause delays.

Taxpayers may receive a letter to verify personal income tax return to combat identity theft. Taxpayers can often submit any information requested using TAP by following the instructions provided in the letter.

New Mexicans who aren’t required to file an income tax return because they are below the IRS income threshold may find it beneficial to file a state return for possible refundable credits and rebates. For more information see our website.

Paper forms are available in Taxation and Revenue district offices and in many libraries throughout the state. To view our district office locations, see contact us page. Forms may also be ordered by calling 1-866-285-2996.
