Original Press Release:

At approximately 11:34 p.m. Wednesday June 19, a male subject called the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority and advised he was driving while intoxicated in the City of Las Cruces and needed to be stopped.

All local agencies were advised of this call and Mesilla Marshals located the vehicle in their jurisdiction. A pursuit was initiated but lost sight of the vehicle. At about 11:55 p.m. a DASO deputy located the vehicle in the area of Valley Drive and Lohman Ave. The deputy attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle continued driving erratically and failed to yield. The pursuit ended in the vicinity of Shalem Colony and an area along the Rio Grande River when the driver stopped suddenly.

Gunfire was exchanged between the deputy and the driver, who was the sole occupant in his vehicle. The driver was injured and first aid was rendered at the scene. He was transported to Mountain View Hospital and succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday, June 20. The deputy was not injured.

No further information will be released until the press conference Friday.
