Men’s Golf: NM State in Sixth After Two Rounds at The Aggie Invitational

Aidan Thomas tied for 15th to lead all Aggies.

BRYAN, Texas – The NM State men’s golf team wrapped up the first day of action at The Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M University at Traditions Club. Following 36 holes on Saturday, the Aggie men’s team stand in sixth place by way of shooting 22-over on the day. Currently, host No. 19 Texas A&M paces the field with a combined score of 573 (-3).

Individually, the Aggies are being led by Aidan Thomas who opened the day with a 72 (E) before carding a 76 (+4) in the second round of play. Thomas’ amassed five birdies across the first two rounds, including birdies on holes nine, 10 and 13 in the first round.

True freshman Mateo Payan also sits inside the top 25 after ending the day in a tie for 21st by shooting a 77 (+5) in the opening round and a 72 (E) in the second round.

Ethan Klose ended the day just one stroke back of Payan after shooting a 76 (+4) and a 74 (+2). Meanwhile, Alexandre Bauduin enters the final round in a tie for 31s (+8) and Anthony Lara sits in a tie for 52nd (+13) to round out the group of Aggies.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • As a team, NM State recorded 28 total birdies to rank third in among in the field behind only No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 6 Oklahoma.
  • Aidan Thomas ended the day at even par on the Par 4s to serve as one of just four players in the field to post a combined score of even or better on the Par 4s.
  • NM State will enter Sunday’s round nine shots back of Louisiana who sits in third place as the Aggies seek their sixth top-three finish of the season.
  • The Aggies are also one of three Conference USA members competing this weekend with both Sam Houston and LA Tech being among the field of 12 teams. NM State currently trails the Bearkats by three strokes, but begin Sunday with a 28-stroke lead over the Bulldogs.
