This June, join Rangers Mike and Sage for hands-on activities to learn about the different animals and plants of the Chihuahuan Desert at Fort Selden Historic Site. Visitors of all ages are welcome to participate.
When: Fort Selden will host these two events on the third weekend of June.
- Sat., June 21, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Animals of New Mexico: Species ID, Learn to identify animals with Ranger Mike using various skulls, bones, and pelts.
- Sun. June 22, 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.: Yucca Leaf Soapmaking, Ranger Sage will guide you through the process of making soap from yucca, which you’ll get to take home.
Where: Fort Selden Historic Site, 1280 Fort Selden Rd, Radium Springs, NM, 88054
Note: The accessible path is unavailable due to ongoing construction at the site. Alternative routes are available through nearby dirt paths. Those facing mobility issues can call 575.526.8911 for questions or concerns.
Why: These programs help to introduce natural history and the landscape around Fort Selden. Programs are included with $5 general admission for adults and are free to children 16 years and younger, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, and MNMF members.
