On July 11, 2024, K-9 Leo was diagnosed with cancer and retired on November 14, 2024. K-9 Leo served alongside his handler for the past 3 years and was a valuable asset to New Mexico State Police. He and his handler patrolled the southern border areas of New Mexico.

Las Cruces, NM- It is with deep sorrow the New Mexico State Police announces the death of K-9 Leo. He passed away on February 8, 2025, due to an aggressive form of bone cancer.

On July 11, 2024, K-9 Leo was diagnosed with cancer and retired on November 14, 2024. K-9 Leo served alongside his handler for the past 3 years and was a valuable asset to New Mexico State Police. He and his handler patrolled the southern border areas of New Mexico.

During his years of service, K-9 Leo has assisted in the seizure of harmful narcotics. Below are the approximate amounts of seizures he had during his years of service:
• 20 Kilograms of fentanyl
• 67 Kilograms methamphetamines
• 50 Kilograms of cocaine
• 8 Kilograms of heroin
Thanks to K-9 Leo, he prevented potential deaths of New Mexicans around the state.
K-9 Leo was more than a working dog, he was a beloved partner and a hero in the community he served. The impact he had in keeping New Mexicans safe will never be forgotten. His handler agreed to care for him and keep their loving bond until K-9 Leo’s final breath. He will be laid to rest in Las Cruces.
