Fort Myers, FLA – The New Mexico State Women’s Basketball team took on the Illinois State Redbirds in the Consolation Finals earlier today. Though the Aggies were able to marginalize their opponent’s lead twice, it was not enough to capture the win, and they fell to Illinois State 82-66.
An electrifying performance came from Molly Kaiser who was the only player to finish in double figures (21 pts). She was able to pick off three separate times for the Aggies, cleaned the glass five times, and took home two assists in the process. She hit 50% from deep (2-for-4) and made 7-for-8 at the line.
Sianny Sanchez-Oliver led the team in assists with six passes coming from her individually, and she finished with eight points which was the second most today for NMSU. She also finished with four boards, just one less than Kaiser.
Though the Aggies were able to find some range in today’s matchup, they went dry at the charity stripe most of the game and made just a little over 50%.
The Redbirds were able to utilize their size extremely well over the Aggies as they made 38 points in the paint. The opponent’s leading scorer, Elyce Knudsen, shot exceptionally well over NMSU as she came off the floor with 23 pts. The team finished with three other players in double figures.
Up Next: The Aggies will head back to New Mexico for a state rivalry matchup against the New Mexico Lobos this upcoming Friday, Dec. 6 as they look to hold onto their winning record and redeem themselves from today’s loss. Tip off will take place at 7 PM MST at the Pit
