As a partner with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) the City of Las Cruces shares this information with residents and motorists.

Construction continues for Phases 1 and 3A of roadway improvements to U.S. Highway 70 and north Main Street, between the intersections of Spitz Avenue and north Solano Drive and Elks Drive and north Triviz Drive. Crews have demolished the bridge on north Main Street, at the Alameda Arroyo, and will begin widening the eastbound lanes of north Main Street this week.

This is a NMDOT project and is being funded with state and federal monies.

These traffic impacts are in effect:

  • The Alameda Arroyo trail crossing is closed.
  • Only one lane of eastbound traffic on U.S. 70 is open from Temple Street to the Elks Drive and north Triviz Drive intersection, and from north of Samaritan Drive to the intersection of Spitz Avenue and Solano Drive.
  • In the area of the Alameda Arroyo bridge, there is only one lane of traffic open in eastbound and westbound directions on the west side of the roadway.
  • There are two lanes open on the west side of U.S. 70 from intersection of Elks Drive and north Triviz Drive to south of Temple Street and from south of the Alameda Arroyo bridge to the intersection of Spitz Avenue and north Solano Drive.

These two phases of construction are expected to last about four months, through May 2024, and will be followed by two additional phases. The complete project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in October 2024.

Regular work hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, although Terrero Construction, the contractor for the project, may work longer hours or on weekends if needed. The speed limit throughout the construction zone is 35 mph.

All construction is dependent on favorable weather and any changes to the construction schedule are subject to change without notice. Motorists are encouraged to be patient, expect delays and look out for construction crews and equipment.
