NMDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, and Terrero Construction will conduct a public meeting on improvements to U.S. Highway 70 and north Main Street from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2024. The meeting will be in the Jornada Elementary School cafeteria, 3400 Elks Drive.

This a NMDOT project.

At this meeting, the construction team will discuss the progress of the project and upcoming planned traffic impacts. Residents who attend the meeting will be able to ask questions and make comments.

Current traffic impacts include:

  • The Alameda Arroyo trail crossing is closed.
  • Only one lane of traffic is open on the east side of U.S. 70 from the intersection of Elks Drive and north Triviz Drive to Temple Street, and from north of Samaritan Drive to the intersection of Spitz Avenue and north Solano Drive.
  • In the area of the Alameda Arroyo bridge, there is only one lane of traffic open for eastbound and westbound traffic on the west side of the road.
  • There are two lanes open on the west side of U.S. 70 from the Elks Drive and north Triviz Drive intersection to south of Temple Street, and from south of the Alameda Arroyo bridge to Spitz Avenue and north Solano Drive intersection.

This phase of construction is expected to continue through May 2024 and will be followed by two additional phases. The project is expected to be completed in October 2024.

Regular work hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, but the contractor may work longer hours if needed. The speed limit is 35 mph in the construction zone.

The project will improve slightly more than one mile U.S. 70 and north Main Street. Road work began Jan. 30, 2024. Details about the project are available online at www.us70mainstreet.com.
