New Mexico State University will host its ninth annual Military and Veterans Appreciation Week Nov. 9-15.

“Military and Veterans Appreciation Week at New Mexico State University is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the service, dedication and sacrifices of military members, veterans and their families within the university community,” said Hector Sanchez, Military and Veterans Programs director. “This event aims to build awareness, foster appreciation and offer support resources for those who have served or are currently serving in the military.”

Starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in Downtown Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Veterans Day Parade will begin the week. The theme of the 2024 parade is Honoring Veteran First Responders. NMSU’s Army and Air Force ROTC will be marching in the parade.

On Monday, Nov. 11, Military and Veterans Appreciation Week kicks off at NMSU. There will be an inaugural ceremony at the Aggie Memorial Tower at 10 a.m. The U.S. Army Cadet Command Special Recognition and Contracting Ceremony will follow.

Following the ceremony, the Student Veterans Organization and the Battling Bastards Student Organization will have an information table from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Corbett Center Student Union main west entrance.

“Military and Veterans Appreciation Week strengthens bonds, raises awareness and provides a dedicated platform for showing respect and appreciation, making it a meaningful tradition for all involved,” Sanchez said. 

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Veterans Day Picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Garcia Center courtyard. Food will be provided by Jim Bobs BBQ, free of charge. Local veteran service organizations will host information tables.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, three events will be held at the northeast side of Corbett Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. NMSU will pay tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces sea vessels, land vehicles and aircraft. Refreshments will be provided. NMSU ROTC Programs, Student Veterans Organization, Battling Bastards Student Organization and the New Mexico National Guard will have information tables.

Under the Aggie tent, Student Veterans Organization will host a Veterans Day Celebration to celebrate veterans with refreshments, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn and games.

On Thursday, Nov. 14, MVP will host an open house in Corbett Center, Room 244 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can learn about MVP and its staff. Refreshments and popcorn will be available.

The week concludes with the NMSU Faculty and Staff Veterans Banquet at 6 p.m. Friday Nov. 15.
