On foot and in Military Tactical Vehicles, Soldiers Patrol Southern Border in Our Broader Community

Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, JTF-SB aligns efforts to seal the southern border and repel illegal activity and is responsible for full-scale, agile, and multi-domain operations.

On March 20, 2025, the Secretary of Defense authorized enhanced detection and monitoring support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), enabling service members to conduct patrolling on foot or using military tactical vehicles to report suspected illegal activity to CBP. Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, JTF-SB aligns efforts to seal the southern border and repel illegal activity and is responsible for full-scale, agile, and multi-domain operations.

Soldiers prepare for foot patrols by covering an M1126 Stryker armored vehicle with a camouflage tarp and sharing map observations. We are working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Department of Homeland Security to secure the southern border.

Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion HHBN 10th MTN Division (Light Infantry) from Fort Drum, New York is currently deployed serving as Joint Task Force Southern Border’s headquarters element.

The Secretary of the Army, the Honorable Dan Driscoll, visited Soldiers from 1-41IR, 2SBCT, 4th Infantry Division, near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, to observe their mission along the southern border. As part of Joint Task Force – Southern Border, these Soldiers support U.S. Customs and Border Protection with enhanced detection and monitoring operations. Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, JTF-SB employs agile, multi-domain capabilities to secure the border and counter illegal activity. The visit highlighted the dedication and operational readiness of the force in this critical mission.
