Mesilla Valley Christian traveled to Fort Sumner and emerged victorious to progress to the 8-man State Championship game, next week. Their semi-final win was a testament to the effort given by the SonBlazers, beating a previously undefeated Fort Sumner/House team. The final score was 28-22, the lowest scoring game for Fort Sumner/House all season. Only in the Melrose game did the SonBlazers score fewer points.

Centennial High School

Of the four teams progressing to State Championship Semifinals, the unbeaten Centennial Hawks top the list. The Hawks seem to like scoring 43 points against the Rams, having tallied the same total in the quarterfinal game as the schools’ regular season meeting. In the quarterfinals, the Hawks defense was slightly more stingy, holding the Rams to only 17 points. Final score: 43-17.

Las Cruces High School

The other Class 6A contender is the Las Cruces High School Bulldawgs. The Dawgs traveled north to play Volcano Vista. The travel didn’t seem to bother the Bulldawgs’ defense, holding the Hawks scoreless for the last three quarters of the game. Las Cruces beat Volcano Vista on the road 17-3 to move on the the Class 6A seminals.

Gadsden High School

The rejiggered Class 5A shook out this weekend, leaving only teams from the expanded District 2/5A in the final four spots. To rise to final four, the Gadsden Panthers faced District 1/5A champions, Los Alamos Hilltoppers. The Hilltoppers were locked with the Panthers until 4th quarter, when the Gadsden offense came alive and rattled off 22 unanswered points. The Panthers ended up winning over the Hilltoppers, 43-14.

Mayfield

In a District 2/5A rematch, the Mayfield Trojans traveled to Deming to face a resurgent Wildcat team. The Wildcats snatched 3rd place in District 2/5A, and were hoping to convert their regular season success to playoff advancement. The Trojans brought their A-game, and toppled the Wildcats, 21-7.
